NGO Roundtable Conference: “The African Third Sector” (Collaborations, Partnerships & Cooperation) – 11th August 2018

Why Choose Finland?

During the United Nations Millennium Conference in 2000, an agreement was reached among all donor countries and aid-receiving nations to align their future development policies and budget priorities with a series of objectives known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). These goals provide both political and practical guidance for international development bodies, governments, and citizens in their unified quest to eliminate poverty. Finland, as a member of the European Union, has pledged to dedicate 0.7% of its Gross National Income (GNI) to development cooperation, with a commitment that 0.2% of its GNI will benefit the world’s least developed countries.

Introduction to the Conference’s Focus

This conference will delve into the challenges associated with leveraging these funds for Africa’s (specifically Nigeria’s) development and the role of the Third Sector Organizations in Nigeria. We aim to explore solutions through collaboration with the Anambra State Association/Foundation, serving as a beacon for partnership and cooperation in securing funding for development, ensuring transparency and accountability.

The Role of Finnish NGOs

According to the “Finland’s Development Cooperation Booklet,” numerous Finnish individuals and NGOs have actively participated in development cooperation. However, Nigerian NGOs have yet to significantly engage with Finnish Development Cooperation efforts. This engagement could dramatically benefit the rural poor. The Finland roundtable conference presents a prime opportunity for Nigerian NGOs, both groups and individuals, to observe, interact, and learn from Finnish NGOs, faith-based organizations, and individuals who have been actively involved in development cooperation.
